Highway Historical Markers

The N.C. Highway Historical Marker Program is one of the oldest continuously operating programs in the nation.  The state program was established in 1935 to provide standard highway markers for places, people, and events historically significant statewide. To date more than 1,600 silver and black markers provide passersby “history on a stick.” Among subjects are educators, schools, churches, battles, generals, artists, poets, preachers, musicians, civil rights, and many others.
