The State Historic Preservation Office assists individuals and institutions, as well as agencies of local, state, and federal government, with the identification and enhancement of properties significant to the state’s history and archeology. It conducts a statewide review of historic buildings and districts, provides environmental review of state and federal acts affecting historic and archaeological properties, and nominates eligible properties to the National Register of Historic Places. More than one billion dollars of investment have been made in properties receiving National Register income producing tax benefits in the state.
