Historical Publications

The Historical Publications Section is the oldest state-supported, continuously operating historical publishing program in the United States. In the past 107 years the section has published more than 300 books that explore major events, periods, and topics in North Carolina’s rich history. Historical Publications also oversees the editing and production of two award-winning series: North Carolina Troops, 1861–1865: A Roster and The Colonial Records of North Carolina [Second Series]. Since 1924, the section has published The North Carolina Historical Review, one of the most respected quarterly journals of its kind in the country.

The Lost Colonists: Their Fortune and Probable Fate focuses on the composition of the Lost Colony of 1587, conditions on Roanoke Island, and the activities of the English colonists after landing there. The author speculates about what happened to the colonists and offers his conclusion as to their fate.

North Carolina as a Civil War Battleground examines such diverse topics as secession, preparations for war, mobilization of troops, Union occupation in eastern North Carolina, blockade-running, Confederate efforts to regain control of Union-occupied areas, Sherman’s march through the center of the state, and the coming of peace. Includes a foldout map of North Carolina, 1861–1865.

Native Carolinians discusses the history, lifestyle, and culture of the native people of the region before the arrival of Europeans and the interaction of the Indians with white settlers during the colonial period. Separate chapters chronicle the experiences of the Cherokees and the Lumbees in the 19th and 20th centuries and Native Carolinians today. Includes a timeline of important dates in North Carolina Indian history.
