Telling Our Stories Photo Exhibit Art

Q. What is purpose of the "Telling Our Stories" photography exhibit?

The "Telling Our Stories" photography exhibit is designed to showcase talented North Carolina photographers who can visually tell a story, often about subjects from within North Carolina. It also will temporarily place works by some of the state's best photographers in venues that usually do not have access to the highest caliber of work.

Q. Who organized the "Telling Our Stories" exhibit?

The exhibit is a collaboration between the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources and Our State Magazine, and includes a selection from winners of the magazine's 2008 photography contest in this its 75th anniversary year. Professional photographers responded to a call for entries to criteria established by a selection panel convened by Cultural Resources Secretary Lisbeth C. "Libba" Evans. Another set of images from the State Archives in the Department of Cultural Resources will complete the traveling exhibit.

Q. How many pictures are in the traveling exhibit?

The "Telling Our Stories" photography exhibit has two parts that will tour the state simultaneously. Each will contain 50 images and will cover half the state. Different photographs will be in each exhibit so as to showcase the largest number possible from the state s trove of photographic treasures.

Q. How long will the exhibit be on tour?

The exhibit will be launched officially on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 3 p.m. at the Forsyth County Public Library. The eastern launch will be at the New Hanover Public Library in Wilmington Oct. 3, 2008. During that time the exhibit will travel to many public libraries. The exhibit will travel through Dec. 31, 2009.

Q. How were venues chosen for the exhibit?

The State Library of North Carolina is a sponsor of the exhibit, and issued a call to public libraries to host the exhibit. Libraries across the state volunteered to mount the Telling Our Stories Photography Exhibit.

Michael s Craft Stores and A.C. Moore helped with framing and materials.

Q. Are any photographers also authors?

Yes. Rob Amberg, Byron Baldwin, Paul Dagys, Taj Forer, Susan Page, Margaret Sartor, John Rosenthal, and David Spear.

Q. What is the oldest photo in the exhibit?

The Oystering Crew is 1884 and the State Capitol photo is circa 1880's.

Q. What are some landmarks included in the exhibit?

The State Capitol in Raleigh, the Wright Brothers Memorial at Kitty Hawk.
