North Carolina: “Telling Our Stories”
And what a great story we have to tell!
"Telling Our Stories" is a year-long celebration that showcases North Carolina's arts, heritage, and cultural life.
Stories abound here. History comes alive at destinations like Tryon Palace, where George Washington danced; at our History museums, where the past is always present; and historic sites like the Thomas Wolfe Memorial, inspiration for the famed novel “Look Homeward Angel.” Our state’s public libraries feature story times and shelves of stories that can transport readers around the state and across the universe.
More than 1,500 silver state highway historical
markers describe duels fought, libraries and churches built, railroad history and tales, North Carolina American Indian tribes, the Civil War, civil rights, and more. Each marker features GPS coordinates.
Come “Explore Cultural Heritage Online” at www.ncecho.org. Led by the State Library, it shares cultural information online 24 hours a day.
North Carolina is a big state — 10 hours to drive from Murphy to Manteo — and in between is a lively contemporary culture and a 12,000 year old history. What a great story we have to tell!
