Branford Marsalis Named State Spokesperson
For Library "Smartest Card" Sign-Up Campaign

RALEIGH —Branford Marsalis, Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and North Carolina resident, is serving as the spokesperson for the statewide library card sign-up campaign helping library staff spread the message that your library card is the smartest card in your wallet. At a recent kickoff event, Marsalis shared some thoughts, "One of the first things I did when we moved to Carolina six years ago was get my library card." Marsalis frequents his hometown library, the North Regional Durham County Public Library, and loves finding books to read to his children.

Public libraries across the state are bringing this nationally established campaign to North Carolina to encourage residents to visit and use the resources available through their local libraries. They will promote this initiative throughout September. Contact your local library to see what is going on in your community.

In 1987, the American Library Association declared September National Library Card Sign-up Month. Since then, libraries across North Carolina have used the national campaign to encourage North Carolinians to sign-up for library cards. The State Library of North Carolina coordinates the campaign effort statewide by offering public libraries support and promotional materials to encourage residents to sign up for a library card and find out what's new at their local library.

The State Library of North Carolina is a division of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. The State Library of North Carolina works in partnership with communities to develop library service, coordinates statewide programs for all types of libraries, and offers direct library service to state employees, genealogy researches, and people who have visual and physical handicaps.
