BATH, NC -- Patricia Samford of New Bern has been appointed manager of Historic Bath and chief of the Northeast section of the division of N.C. Historic Sites. She began working in the position February 17.

Samford was formerly with Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens where she had been archaeologist and museum services head since May 1999. Previously, she worked at the University of North Carolina Research Labs of Archaeology and Colonial Williamsburg in Williamsburg, Va.

“Patricia brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to her new position,”
said Kay Williams, director of the N.C. Historic Sites, a unit of the N.C. As section manager, Samford will oversee Historic Bath, Historic Edenton, Historic Halifax, and Somerset Place.

Consistently recognized for her work, Samford received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant in 2000, a Getty Institute fellowship in 1998 and a research fellowship at the Winterthur Museum in Winterthur, Del., in 1994. She has co-written and published two books: “Archaeology for Young Explorers: Uncovering History at Colonial Williamsburg” (1995) and “Intrigue of the Past: North Carolina’s First Peoples. A Teacher’s Activity Guide for Fourth Through Sixth Grades” (2001). In addition, Patricia Samford has written numerous articles in regional history journals, reviewed articles for professional publications, edited scholarly works and served on editorial boards and committees dealing with archaeology and historic preservation.

Samford holds a doctorate in anthropology from UNC-Chapel Hill (2000), a master’s in anthropology/historical archaeology from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. (1990), and a bachelor’s in both anthropology and psychology from William and Mary (1979).
