( RALEIGH, Nov.15) -- Two historical maps reproduced from the extensive Map Collection of the North Carolina State Archives are available for purchase from the Historical Publications Section of the state Office of Archives and History.

The “Field Map of Lieut. Koener’s Military Survey between Neuse and Tar Rivers North Carolina” was prepared by Jeremy Francis Gilmer (1818-1883) who was born in Guilford County. Gilmer graduated from the U.S. military academy in 1839 and later served as an engineer in the Confederate States of America Army. This Civil War map (ca.1863) measures 28 x 36 inches and shows towns, rivers, railroads, landowners, and forts between the Neuse and Tar Rivers in eastern North Carolina.

The 1878 “Map of Wake County” was drawn from actual surveys by Fendol Bevers [Beavers] (1822-1883), county surveyor for Wake County. The attractive colored map measures 30 x 27½ inches and shows landowners, churches, retail stores, schools, and mills. It includes an inset of the City of Raleigh, a table of population, and other information by township.

“These maps are wonderful resource tools for anyone studying state or local history and genealogy,” said Donna Kelly, administrator of the Historical Publications Section. Each map costs $22.05, which includes tax and shipping. Order from Historical Publications Section, Office of Archives and History, 4622 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-4622.
