( RALEIGH –Oct. 16) – Pirate fascination is a long-standing phenomenon and now there’s a colorful book of poetry for children all about the exploits of the notorious pirate Blackbeard. Here are examples:
Edward Teach as Blackbeard |
At Teach’s Hole |
| Now Teach was tall as a waterfall | The ghostly headless figure |
| And strong as a rum-soaked cask. | Of Blackbeard, it is said, |
| The sea would quake in the sloop’s wide wake | Still swims under the moonlight |
| When he took a man to task… | Looking for its severed head. |
The notebook-sized volume of verse written by J. Patrick Lewis is skillfully illustrated through reproductions of old paintings and sketches, along with original artwork. Published by National Geographic, the authenticity of the history was verified by the author through conversations with David Moore, nautical archaeologist with the N.C. Maritime Museum and noted Blackbeard scholar. The book may be purchased at the N.C. Maritime Museum shop and at other booksellers.
The shipwreck believed to be the Queen Anne’s Revenge, Blackbeard’s flagship, was located near Beaufort, N.C., by the Florida-based research firm, Intersal, Inc. in 1996. Since 1997, the State of North Carolina has managed the site. Research is ongoing, and the latest underwater excavation at the site is underway, through Nov. 10.

The Queen Anne’s Revenge Shipwreck Project is administered by the Office of Archives and History in the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, a state agency dedicated to the promotion and protection of North Carolina’s arts, history and culture.
