State Library Awards $4.6 Million in Grants

RALEIGH — The State Library Division of the Department of Cultural Resources is awarding $4.6 million in grants for 146 local and statewide library projects for technology improvements, digitization of materials, library book collections, and community outreach. The grant funding is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), a federal grant making agency.
“These grants fund projects across the state that help libraries promote literacy, provide services to families, and improve the sharing of technology,” said Cultural Resources Secretary Lisbeth C. “Libba” Evans. “Because of programs like this, North Carolina plays a leadership role in lifelong learning.”
One hundred thirty-four local library projects were funded in 14 grant categories; for a total of $3.1 million:
- Local projects funded affect 69 counties 12 statewide projects were funded; for a total of $1.5 million. Some of the statewide projects include:
- Access to State Government Information Project;
- Collaborative Virtual Reference Project (NCknows);
- Career Enrichment Grants for library staff;
- North Carolina ECHO Exploring Cultural Heritage Online;
- and the State Library of North Carolina Library Leadership Program Leading Library Excellence.

Administered by the State Library, the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant program funds projects across the state that support learning and discovery for children, teens, and adults; achieve equity in library service; and create a climate for innovation and change.
LSTA is managed by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), an agency dedicated to creating and sustaining a nation of learners by helping libraries and museums serve their communities. Funds are provided to state library agencies using a population-based formula. State libraries may use funds for statewide initiatives and services, and may also grant funds to public, academic, school, research and special libraries. LSTA funding supports library projects that expand learning resources and provide access to information for individuals from all walks of life.
