NORTH CAROLINA AWARDS NOMINATIONS OPEN

(RALEIGH, Feb. 5) Nominations for the 2007 North Carolina Award, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the state, are now being accepted. Created by the General Assembly in 1961, the award recognizes significant contributions of individuals in the fields of fine arts, literature, public service and science over time.
Award nominations may include biographies, resumes and letters of support, and may be submitted by anyone. They should be sent to the North Carolina Awards Committee, 4601 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, North Carolina 27699-4601. Nominations are open until April15.
The North Carolina Awards Committee will review the nominations and select the recipients this summer. The recipients, representing the best of North Carolina, will be honored during ceremonies in Raleigh in the fall.
Award recipients in 2006 were William T. Williams, New York (originally from Cross Creek, now part of Fayetteville), for fine arts; Michael Fleming, Greensboro, for literature; Emily Herring Wilson, Winston-Salem, for literature; Dr. Thomas K. Hearn, Winston-Salem, for public service; former Gov. James Holshouser, Southern Pines, for public service; Roy Parker Jr., Fayetteville, for public service; and Charles Sanders, Durham, for Science.
The award program is administered by the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, a state agency dedicated to the promotion and protection of North Carolina’s arts, history and culture.
