For Cultural Treasure, N.C. Marks the Spot!

North Carolina is a big state — 10 hours to drive from Murphy to Manteo — and in between is a lively contemporary culture and a 12,000 year old history. When you talk about cultural treasures, North Carolina marks the spot!
“Treasure N.C. Culture” is a year-long celebration of North Carolina culture and heritage. As the theme for the Department of Cultural Resources in 2009, it will honor and promote the things that make North Carolina such a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
Cultural Resources treasures include Tryon Palace, where George Washington danced; seven history museums, where the past is always present; 27 Historic Sites like the Thomas Wolfe Memorial, inspiration for the famed novel “Look Homeward Angel;” and our state’s public libraries, which feature riches for readers, young and old alike.
More than 1,500 silver state highway historical markers document North Carolina culture and heritage - duels fought, libraries and churches built, railroad history and tales, North Carolina American Indian tribes, the Civil War, civil rights, and more. Each marker features GPS coordinates.
Come “Explore Cultural Heritage Online” at www.ncecho.org. Led by the State Library, it shares cultural information online 24 hours a day.
The talented and dynamic people engaged in the creative life of the state enrich our cultural life and make North Carolina a dynamic place. Artists and scholars, museum curators, poets and dancers, librarians and writers, designers and craftspeople, illustrators and actors, painters and potters, teachers, furniture makers and weavers – all add to the cultural treasure of North Carolina.
