3rd Tuesday: Thomas Nast and the Historical Imagery of Santa Claus

Event Description

Presenter: Jim McKee

Did yo know, before the Civil War, our image of Santa Clause was quite different? Based on a Greek Orthodox bishop, St. Nicholas was a tall, thin man considered the patron saint of sailors and children. The secular Santa we know today is a creation from the Victorian period. Join Jim McKee as we learn the history of Santa Claus and how this iconic figure played into Civil War history.
