Art Museums in North Carolina
You don't have travel to New York and pay $25 to see world-class art. State art museums in Raleigh and Winston-Salem give all North Carolinians access to the best that the art world has to offer for free. At our two art museums you can see everything from masterworks by Picasso and Rembrandt to cutting-edge work by Tar Heel artists working today.
North Carolina Museum of Art
One of the South's premier art museums, the N.C. Museum of Art’s collection includes major holdings in European painting from the Renaissance to the 19th century, Egyptian funerary art, sculpture and vase painting from ancient Greece and Rome, American art from a range of periods and international contemporary art.
The museum boasts the South's largest collections of Rodin sculptures and an impressive collection of Jewish art. It is surrounded by the nation's largest art museum park, offering visitors the chance to experience art in a unique outdoor setting.
Admission to the NCMA's permanent collection and park is free.
Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA)
SECCA (North Carolina Museum of Art, Winston-Salem) was founded in 1956 by Winston-Salem industrialist James G. Hanes with the mission of showcasing the work of contemporary southern artists. It continues that tradition today with an added focus on exhibiting the work of the country’s major contemporary artists, and employing dynamic and innovative approaches and tools to connect students with contemporary art for discovery.
