Super Bowl Food for Thought

Players for the Super Bowl bound teams are not the only ones making preparations for the big game. Lots of local grills, pizza parlors and neighborhood kitchens are also gearing up. Here’s the skinny (or not) on food consumption in North Carolina and the country.

What is North Carolina’s favorite food? Buffalo wings, according to theinsider.com. But other suggestions include crispy fried chicken, pulled pork barbecue or pimento cheese deviled eggs. Even more adventurous ideas offered are crab cake poppers, shrimp and grits or gumbo with grilled corn grits.

What gastronomic delights appeal to the country as a whole? You could guess the top five, according to the Daily Meal. In order they are: pizza, chili, chicken wings, nachos and guacamole. For Tar Heel loyalists, pulled pork sandwiches and deviled eggs were right behind the leaders.

Parents magazine counts Super Sunday as a big holiday with big food traditions, reporting that Americans eat more food only on Thanksgiving. The report notes that the American Chicken Council says 1.3 billion chicken wings will be eaten Saturday and Sunday and that pizza restaurants find that Super Bowl Sunday is the busiest day of the year. Finishing the top five foods are potato chips, guacamole and tortilla chips.

Pursuitist reports a 20% increase in antacid sales the Monday after Super Sunday, and that seven million people will not show up for work that Monday.

Just a little food for thought.
