North Carolina Executive Mansion

The North Carolina Executive Mansion is the official residence of the Governor of North Carolina and their family. Building began in the year 1883 and it was designed by architects Samuel Sloan and A.G. Bauer. The North Carolina’s Executive Mansion is not only home to the Governor, it is the “people’s house.” The building is also a meeting space, a historic site, and an elegant event location. In addition, thousands of visitors visit during public tour season and during the holiday open house. Governor Roy Cooper is the thirtieth governor to live in the Mansion. He is the seventieth person to hold this office in North Carolina since the end of the American Revolution. A History and Virtual Tour of The People’s House

This fine Victorian-style mansion, home to N.C. governors since 1891, once was described by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt as being “the most beautiful governor’s residence interior in America.” Built from native materials, it has been occupied by 28 governors’ families.

Tour the Mansion in Person

Free tours of both the house and gardens are available through the Capitol Area Visitors Center. Tour reservations must be made a minimum of two weeks in advance; tour hours are limited and vary seasonally.

Western Residence

The Governor’s Western Residence (GWR) occupies 18 acres of lush mountainside. Through the years, the home has been used by governors and other state delegates, but also by evangelist Billy Graham, former U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, and various garden clubs, libraries, and school systems. Yet the estate, with its well-worn wooden game tables, rustic artwork, and mountain-themed furnishings, is almost entirely unknown elsewhere in North Carolina.
