National History Day in North Carolina

North Carolina History Day is a program designed to promote an interest in history among students, and to assist teachers in teaching history more effectively. The program helps students develop skills in historical research, analysis, critical thinking, organization and presentation, as well as improve reading and writing skills.

Students use these skills to design an exhibit, write a paper, produce a documentary, create a performance or develop a website centered around an annual theme. An optional part of the National History Day program is competing with their project.  Students start at a regional level contest in order to qualify for contests at the state and national levels. At each level of competition, judges review the students' work and provide constructive feedback. Students are then encouraged to revise their projects based on this feedback for each stage of the contest.
