"The Mountains Are Calling" Exhibit Opening

The Mountains Are Calling

Event Description

The Capitol is hosting an exhibit opening for The Mountains Are Calling: At Home in Western North Carolina with photographer Dr. Brenda Scott on Thursday, January 18th at 6pm. Dr. Scott will speak, and visitors can ask questions and view the exhibit. Light refreshments will be provided, admission is FREE.

Telling its story with objects, labels, and striking high resolution photographs, The Mountains Are Calling utilizes the scenery around the Vance Birthplace State Historic Site to explore life in the North Carolina mountains from c.1790 to c.1830. The photographs highlight aspects of daily life - from child rearing to wood working - and works to contextualize the Vance family and the enslaved people who lived and worked on the property.

This exhibit was produced by Vance Birthplace State Historic Site, the North Carolina State Capitol, and photographer Dr. Brenda Scott. It will be on display from January 2018 through April 2018.

The exhibit’s photographs were shot by Dr. Brenda Scott. Dr. Scott is an art photographer based in Durham, NC. For more information on Dr. Scott or her photographs, visit her website at www.brendascottarts.com.
