Current Contest Rules

If students are competing, it is important that they follow the official National History Day rules. Please click one to the boxes below to access the current NHD Rule Book in English or Spanish.

The Annual Theme

National History Day's 2023-24 theme is "Turning Points in History." Students should choose a history topic that connects to this theme and show that connection in their projects. Visit our NHD Theme page to start brainstorming on topics and find resources to help you on this year's journey!

It's a safe and secure online video editing program, perfect for documentary students or those who need to edit video clips for websites or exhibits. Teachers and NHD mentors can monitor and track student work and create their own videos. Email nchistoryday@ncdcr.gov to set up accounts for you and your students.

Planning and Preparing Projects for Contests

If planning to compete, teachers and students should aim to have projects completed before the registration deadline for each contest as some project materials must be submitted online during registration by that deadline. To see what is due during registration in each category, please view the project submission guidelines for all North Carolina regional and state contests.

Regional Contests

North Carolina is divided into eight regions for History Day competitions. Students must first participate in their assigned regional contest, then the finalists from that region will advance to the state competition.
