The North Carolina Poet Laureate Ceremony, scheduled for Wed., Sept. 19 in Raleigh, has been postponed due to the uncertainty of Hurricane Florence and its aftermath.

Jaki Shelton Green was appointed by Governor Roy Cooper in June. She succeeds Shelby Stephenson, who was named poet laureate Feb. 2, 2015.

A new date for the public induction ceremony will be announced on www.NCArts.org.

Ms. Green is North Carolina’s ninth poet laureate and the first African American named to the post. A native of Orange County, Green has been active in North Carolina’s literary and teaching community for more than 40 years. She has penned eight books of poetry, co-edited two poetry anthologies and written one play. She is a 2014 North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame inductee and was the recipient of the North Carolina Award for Literature in 2003.

The Poet Laureate program is one of the most important ways that North Carolina’s rich literary heritage is celebrated and shared with citizens across the state.

A profile of Ms. Green is available here.
