Resolve to try something new this year at "Town Creek Under the Stars" Saturday, Jan. 16.

The origins and impact of slavery in North Carolina, Cabarrus County and the benefits of slave labor to Reed Gold Mine will be examined during Black History Month. Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site will offer "Black Gold: North Carolina Slavery and Reed Gold Mine" tours Saturday, Feb. 6, 13, 20 and 27 at 1 p.m. and examine the area's social and economic environment during John Reed's lifetime.

Volunteers are the face of the State Capitol as they greet visitors and give tours to children and adults. The North Carolina State Capitol is seeking volunteers interested in becoming docents.

Stories of the “southern experience” are as prolific as kudzu. A new exhibit, Southern Impressions: Paintings From the James-Farmer Collection, at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh will take you on a historical journey that explores the cultural heritage, dramatic landscapes and diverse peoples that have shaped the South and the southern experience.

Costumed interpreters will present practices of the 1860s during the "Christmas Customs of the Civil War" program at the CSS Neuse Civil War Interpretive Center Dec. 12, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., following the Kinston Christmas Parade.
