Hurricane Matthew has destroyed many homes and left families in despair, but cultural institutions also may be devastated. The Cultural Resources Emergency Support Team (CREST) can offer help to small public and private museums and holders of archival collections in the flooded areas of the state. It is a free service of the N.C. Department of Natural and Resources.
"The department enlists dozens of experts from the Coastal Plain to the Urban Crescent and the Mountain region to help with disaster recovery of public and private cultural heritage collections," says Adrienne Berney, CREST Coordinator. "Our statewide responders join forces with Area Cultural Resources Emergency Network leaders and conservators to assist collecting institutions across North Carolina."
CREST provides these services:
- technical assistance for North Carolina's museum and archival collections in the aftermath of flood, fire, mold and more
- training for staff and volunteers
- guidance in navigating disaster preparedness and recovery processes
