Shipbuilding Saturday

Event Description

On October 17, 1862, the Confederate Navy Department awarded a contract to the ship building firm of Howard & Ellis of New Bern, North Carolina, to construct an ironclad warship to protect the Neuse River. However, since New Bern had been occupied by Union forces since March of 1862, the firm had to construct the ship much further inland, near modern day Seven Springs, NC.

In honor of that anniversary, the CSS Neuse Civil War Interpretive Center is hosting “Shipbuilding Saturday” on Saturday, October 20, 2018.
Danny Nye will be on hand to demonstrate caulking a ship’s hull. We will conduct hands on children’s programs, lay out our teaching collection of some original artifacts off the ship that visitors can touch and hold, and we will also have a rope making/knot tying demonstration.
