The SLNC Government and Heritage Library celebrates the study, understanding and appreciation of North Carolina’s cultural heritage. If you need help researching a specific topic related to the Tar Heel State or want to discover your family's history by tracing your genealogy, chances are the library has a resource for you.

What Can I Find at the Government and Heritage Library?

The Government and Heritage Library's collection includes a large selection of specific books, journals, newspapers and more. Most materials are related to genealogy, government. North Carolina history and culture and statistics.

An online catalog of materials is available so you can see if we have what you need before you visit. Popular genealogy databases, like Ancestry.com, are also available for free at our library.

Perhaps more valuable than any of our individual materials are the librarians who care for them. With expertise in demographics, state government research, genealogy, digital preservation and more, our librarians are happy to help you with your next project.

Services for Librarians and State Employees

Whether you need to a borrow a book from our collection through inter-library loan, preserve or access the publications produced by your state agency, get more information on the digital preservation of records or would like help with cataloging, we support librarians and state employees.

Do I Need to Come in Person?

We would love for you to visit in person, however our goal is give you access to our materials when and where you need them. As part of that mission, the Government and Heritage Library has made a wide range of materials available online.

From statistics on North Carolina places and industries to digital collections with thousands of primary materials related to Tar Heel government, history and culture, terabytes of information are accessible with just a few clicks.
