Just minutes off Interstate 40 near Asheville, the Mountain Gateway Museum and Heritage Center in Old Fort preserves the distinct traditions and customs of the North Carolina mountains. Permanent exhibits explore folk medicine, moon-shining and the craft culture of the region.
Two cabins on site showcase what life what was like southern Appalachia during the 19th century.
Special exhibitions and programs focus on Spanish exploration in the area, the Civil War in the western part of the state and the old-time and bluegrass music that has made the Blue Ridge Mountains world-famous.

The Mountain Gateway Museum is open seven days a week and is closed on some holidays. Hours are 12 to 5 p.m. on Mondays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and 2 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. You can call or email the museum:
