We are seeking interns across the state to gain experience and learn about career opportunities with us. As an intern, you will have a broad range of responsibilities including education and interpretation, natural resource management, groundskeeping, facility upkeep, park operations, and visitor services. Join our team at Fort Macon State Park for an exciting opportunity to contribute to biodiversity conservation through our Natural Resources Inventory project, which includes participation in the Carolinas Butterfly Monitoring Program (CarBMP). As an intern, you will conduct surveys and data collection efforts aimed at studying the flora and fauna diversity within the park. This project expands beyond butterflies to encompass a broader scope of natural resources, providing hands-on experience in biodiversity monitoring and ecological research. Work alongside park staff to help preserve and protect the diverse ecosystems of Fort Macon State Park. Candidates must have reliable transportation for reporting to and from work. Fishing at Hanging Rock Parks and Recreation, North Carolina State Parks Hanging Rock State Park, Danbury NC Come spend the summer with North Carolina State Parks! We are seeking interns across the state to gain experience and learn about career opportunities with us. As an intern, you will have a broad range of responsibilities including education and interpretation, natural resource management, grounds keeping, facility upkeep, park operations and visitor services. Examine and understand existing fishing pier and fishing opportunities and types of aquatic species in Hanging Rock State Park. Intern will create signage with images and wording to help anglers understand rules and regulations regarding fishing and boating on Hanging Rock lake, such as size and creel limits for different fish. Intern will be physically installing the signage using basic carpentry and labor skills. Park staff will assist on all aspects of the project. Candidates must have reliable transportation for reporting to and from work. Visitor trail behavior at Hanging Rock Parks and Recreation, North Carolina State Parks Hanging Rock State Park, Danbury NC Come spend the summer with North Carolina State Parks! We are seeking interns across the state to gain experience and learn about career opportunities with us. As an intern, you will have a broad range of responsibilities including education and interpretation, natural resource management, groundskeeping, facility upkeep, park operations, and visitor services. Examine and understand the steep terrain, geology, unique plant life, and undisturbed animal habitat that exists along the newly built section of the Hanging Rock trail. Using this information, the intern will create signage with images and wording to help park visitors understand why it is important to stay on the trail in this delicate section. The intern will also be physically installing the signage using basic carpentry and labor skills. Park staff will assist with oversight of all aspects of the project. Oral History Project at Carvers Creek Parks and Recreation, North Carolina State Parks Carvers Creek State Park, Spring Lake NC Come spend the summer with North Carolina State Parks! We are seeking two (2) interns across the state to gain experience and learn about career opportunities with us. As an intern, you will have a broad range of responsibilities including education and interpretation, natural resource management, groundskeeping, facility upkeep, park operations, and visitor services. Research and be a part of collecting and preserving the history of Carvers Creek State Park. You will work with the community and park staff to identify community members with memories and experiences on the parkland and interview them to collect oral histories. Hunting camps and turpentine production were a couple of the land uses in recent years, and the history and people’s stories will be part of the exhibits being created for the Rockefeller House renovation. Candidates must have reliable transportation for reporting to and from work. Most positions will have the use of State vehicles for internship duties if required. There is no housing available at Carvers Creek State Park, however housing will be provided for you. Year of the Bear Programming at Mount Mitchell Parks and Recreation, North Carolina State Parks Mount Mitchell State Park, Burnsville NC Come spend the summer with North Carolina State Parks! We are seeking interns across the state to gain experience and learn about career opportunities with us. As an intern, you will have a broad range of responsibilities including education and interpretation, natural resource management, grounds keeping, facility upkeep, park operations, and visitor services. Come hone your interpretive skills at Mount Mitchell State Park. You will develop and implement interpretive programs based on the park’s natural, historical, and cultural resources, with a special focus on bear awareness programs for NC State Park’s 2024 Year of the Bear theme. We are seeking interns across the state to gain experience and learn about career opportunities with us. As an intern you will have a broad range of responsibilities including education and interpretation, natural resource management, grounds keeping, facility upkeep, park operations and visitor services. Develop your programming skills at New River State Park and Mount Jefferson State Natural Area. You will develop and implement interpretive programs based on the park’s natural, historical and cultural resources, with a focus on two summer events: the New River Canoe Race and Eastern Hellbender surveys (Hellbender Week). Explore your passion for natural resource management through several summer project experiences including: longleaf coring and aging project at Carvers Creek State Park, mapping of rare and threatened species at Mitchell Mill State Natural Area, and seep/wetland mapping at Weymouth Woods State Natural Area and Carvers Creek State Park. Fire Management Parks and Recreation, North Carolina State Parks Yorkshire Operations Building, Raleigh NC Come spend the summer with North Carolina State Parks! We are seeking interns across the state to gain experience and learn about career opportunities with us. The use of prescribed fire allows the Division to accomplish a number of goals, including the removal of hazardous fuel levels; the reduction of wildfire risk to neighboring properties; the protection of biological diversity; the protection of rare species and their habitats; and the opportunity to provide the public with timely information on an important environmental education topic. The internship will begin with getting certified as a Wildland Firefighter Type 2 after completing National Wildland Fire Coordinator Group Courses in S-130 Firefighter Training, S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior, L-180 Human Factors on the Fireline, and FEMA IS-100 Introduction to the Incident Command System, and IS-700 An Introduction to the National Incident Management System. Under close supervision, the intern will receive on-the-job training in wildland fire management activities such as prescribed fire implementation, public outreach, and administration. The candidate may be responsible for reviewing plans, making maps, or utilizing a drip torch to light vegetation on fire. Candidates must have reliable transportation for reporting to and from work. The intern is based at the Yorkshire Operations Building at Falls Lake, and housing is available at Umstead State Park if needed.
