Federal Grants

The State Historic Preservation Office is now accepting applications for FY 2020 Historic Preservation Fund grant for Certified Local Governments (CLGs).  Instructions and application materials are attached. We estimate that 2020 funding it will be between $100,000 to $110,000 and for all CLGs in the state.  Due to Covid-19, the postmark or email deadline for FY 2020 grants has been extended to Friday, May 15, 2020. If you choose to email your application to me, please make sure that you receive a confirmation within 48 hours to make sure that the application has been received.

An estimated total of $100,000-$110,000 may be available for projects in CLG municipalities and counties, in accordance with federal requirements.  A list of current CLGs can be found below, or online.  Not-for-profits and educational institutions within a CLG may also be eligible. (Unfortunately, funds for non-CLG communities will not be available in 2020.)

Grant awards, which may cover up to sixty per cent of total projects costs, generally range from $1,000 to $15,000 and are available on a reimbursement basis. Local matching funds should try to cover at least forty per cent (40%) of the total project costs. Grant projects will be selected for funding on a competitive basis.

Eligible projects include architectural and archaeological surveys, National Register nominations, survey publication manuscripts, local preservation design guidelines and preservation plans, educational activities related to historic preservation or archaeology, and pre-development planning and restoration of National Register-listed properties (privately-owned buildings are not eligible). All projects must address one or more goals in North Carolina's state historic preservation plan. A copy of the state plan goals is attached.

**Please remind any potential applicants that we will need for them to discuss proposed projects with an HPO staff member before submitting an application.  This will help to ensure that the proposed project meets grant guidelines and has a realistic scope of work and budget.

We hope to be able to announce grant awards in May, but please note that this will depend on when federal funding becomes available.

Please read the cover memo for important information about this grant cycle.
