Though the weather outside was frightful, that didn’t stop Sec. Susan Kluttz from joining a record crowd at Tryon Palace’s delightful Christmas Candlelight event Saturday evening.
Tryon Palace’s Christmas program has long been a New Bern favorite, but this year’s theme, “Seasons of the Delight,” has taken it to a new level. Each room on the Palace’s first floor is decorated in the style of a different season of the year, and interpreters bring the building alive as it would have been for a masquerade ball hosted by Gov. Josiah Martin.
The fun doesn’t end there, either. The kitchen is working as it would have been for an event on such a grand scale, and visitors can enjoy holiday treats in “Mac’s Coffee House” behind it. Costumed performers—including the Palace’s famed Jonkonnu troupe, the North Raleigh Christian Academy Choir and several magicians—and the chance to make a mask for the masquerade round out the event’s diverse offerings.
Tickets are still available for the Palace’s final Candlelight Masquerade this Saturday, Dec. 21. Online sales end at midnight Thursday, but you can get tickets at the box office any time before and during the event. Those who came for the first Candlelight can also return this Saturday and pick up a pass that allows them to see the fireworks they missed due to rain.
