Bennett Belles

Bennett College, located in Greensboro, NC, was founded on August 1, 1873, as a coed “normal school” to educate freedmen and train both men and women to be teachers. In 1926, Bennett college became a four-year women’s college. These dynamic women are known internationally as the Bennett Belles.

The Bennett Belles have always been encouraged to advocate for important issues. In 1937, the Belles protested against segregated movie theaters and the way Black women were portrayed on the screen.  The early 1960’s found the Bennett Belles participating in lunch counter campaigns with NC A&T State University students to protest segregation laws. Their efforts were successful. Today the Bennett Belles continue to make their mark on the world.
