The free, fun, family event, "Pork, Pickles and Peanuts: Tastes of North Carolina" at Duke Homestead July 9, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., celebrates North Carolina's food history and culture. It focuses on everything that makes the state taste great with the highly competitive and extremely tasty annual Barbecue Cook-Off and Pie Competition.

Visitors can get a taste of the action themselves by voting in the coveted BBQ People's Choice Award, or donating $1 for a slice of competition pies! You can also snack on - what else - peanuts and pickles from vendors. Those interested can enter themselves in the pie competition on the Duke Homestead website. Enjoy live music from local artists throughout the day.

Historical cooking demonstrations take center stage at the historic Duke house as we explore North Carolina's delicious past. Visitors will see 19th Century pickling, a peanut boil, and at 1:45 p.m., a full meal prepared by a costumed interpreter who specializes in historic hearth cooking. Kids can try out 19th century games and toys, make and take a special recipe, and everyone will enjoy traditional banjo and fiddle music in the yard.

"Pork, Pickles and Peanuts: Tastes of North Carolina" is sponsored by LeafFilter™ North, Inc. For more information, please contact (919) 477-5498 or visit DukeHomestead.org. Duke Homestead is part of the Division of State Historic Sites within the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
