Tomahawk throwing, cannon firing and militia camps are part of the excitement at the 234th annual re-enactment of the Battle at the House in the Horseshoe Aug. 1-2. The House in the Horseshoe State Historic Site will offer other Revolutionary War-era activities including re-enactment of the fight between Philip Alston and David Fanning. The Saturday event will be 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m., the Sunday program will be 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. There is a $5 fee for parking.

Other period activities include skillet throwing, spinning and weaving demonstrations, and a discussion about herbs and surgeons and medicine. In addition to musket firing and military drills, the Sons of the American Revolution will have a wreath-laying ceremony. An 18th century fashion show, house tours, and story time for the kids will complete the fun.

Come witness the fight between Patriot Philip Alston and British Loyalist David Fanning in the same setting where it was fought in 1781. See how the Loyalists and Patriots felt about each other, their country, and the lengths they would go to support their beliefs. Enjoy a day in the bend of the Deep River and relive the excitement of the American Revolution. Other period events are planned for the It's Revolutionary! series at historic sites through 2017.

The House in the Horseshoe is located at 288 Alston House Rd., Sanford, N.C. and is 16 miles west of Sanford off NC 42, and 10 miles north of Carthage on Carbonton-Carthage Road (State Road 1006/16310).
