Dale Earnhardt Tribute Plaza

The Dale Earnhardt Tribute Plaza stands as a poignant homage to one of NASCAR's most iconic figures, Dale Earnhardt. Located in Kannapolis, North Carolina, Earnhardt's hometown, this one-acre plaza is more than just a memorial; it's a testament to his enduring legacy and the deep connection between motorsports and the local community. At the heart of the plaza stands a remarkable nine-foot-tall bronze statue crafted by Arizona sculptor Clyde Ross Morgan, capturing the essence of Earnhardt's legendary career and larger-than-life persona.

Every element of the plaza is imbued with symbolism, reflecting the milestones and achievements of Dale Earnhardt's illustrious career. From the granite base of the statue pedestal divided into seven sections representing his seven Winston Cup Championships to the seven steps descending into the plaza, each detail pays tribute to Earnhardt's unparalleled success on the racetrack. Additionally, the 76 granite sections surrounding the statue square commemorate Earnhardt's 76 Winston Cup career wins, with plans for future additions as funds are donated, ensuring his legacy continues to grow.

The design of the plaza itself is steeped in symbolism, with the oval-shaped walk representing a racetrack, a fitting tribute to a man who dominated oval tracks throughout his career. Gold mop cypress shrubs and vintage jade distylium planted in sets of three, along with benches grouped in sets of three, pay homage to Earnhardt's iconic car number, three. Even the lighting, with eight lights shining on the statue to represent the car number of Earnhardt's father, Ralph Earnhardt, adds another layer of significance to the tribute.

Perhaps most poignantly, the statue of Dale Earnhardt faces his childhood home and "Idiot's Circle," a local gathering spot where Earnhardt honed his skills behind the wheel. It's a reminder of the humble beginnings of a racing legend and the indelible mark he left on the sport.
